Ballot Initiatives set for the November 5th General Election
The Nebraska Supreme Court heard arguments on the two Abortion Initiatives and the Private School Voucher Referendum the week of September 9th. The court handed down its ruling and all three will stay on the ballot. The ballot initiatives to legalize and regulate medical marijuana in Nebraska have officially been certified for the November ballot in the face of a local lawsuit and a statewide investigation into whether enough of the signatures were valid.
The confirmed ballot initiatives and referendum are:
- Paid Sick Leave
- Protect Women and Children (ban after the first trimester with exceptions)
- Protect Our Rights (right to an abortion until fetal viability
- Private Education Voucher partial referendum
- Nebraska Medical Cannabis Patient Protection initiative petition
- Nebraska Medical Cannabis Regulation initiative petition
Because of the number of initiatives on the ballot and the potential confusion voters might have as they head to the ballot box, Rachel Gibson, the League of Women Voters – Nebraska, created a PowerPoint presentation and a one-page overview of the ballot initiatives for voters.
Jean McGuire has presented at Doane University in Crete. She and Rachel will be presenting it at the next the Lunch and Learn on October 3. Jean is working with our intern, Audrey West, to present it at Nebraska Wesleyan University and has reached out to the University of Nebraska to see if they have an interest. If you know of other organizations who would like to have the League come and speak or if you would like to help with the presentations, contact llpresident@lincolnleague.org
