President’s Message
March 2025
While there is a lot to follow at the state capital these days (and thanks to all who are providing input to our senators on the various bills being introduced), there is also the upcoming Lincoln elections. For those of us who live in Lincoln being able to engage in these election feels like, or at least in my case, I am more empowered. It is closer to home, not in Washington DC, where I don’t feel the same sense of control.
The April 8 primary and the May 6 general election are just around the corner.
Voters will elect three people to the City Council, one person to the Lincoln Airport Authority and four people to Lincoln Public School Board of Education (Districts 1, 3, 5 & 7).
In addition, Lincolnites will vote on extending the existing quarter-cent sales tax dedicated to street improvements under the Lincoln on the Move program which is set to expire on September 30, 2025. This will be on the primary ballot. The Lincoln For Fair Housing ballot initiative, if not enacted by the City Council, will be on the general election ballot.
Our League is already involved in election readiness in a number of ways. Mimi Wickless and Jane Witte, Voter Registration Directors, are organizing a number of voter registration events prior to the election. Deb Dulgar, the Director of Voter Education, along with League volunteers, is readying VOTE411, our online voter guide. Judy Kelly, VP of Action and Community Engagement, and I are in the early planning stages of what we hope will be a candidate forum. Ballot Initiative education information will be developed and distributed once final ballot language is finalized.
All of these activities could use more involvement from League members. If you can help with any of these election activities, Contact Us.
