Lincoln For Fair Housing Initiative Certified
On Monday, February 3, the Lincoln for Fair Housing Coalition, turned in over 15,000 signatures in support of source-of-income protections. League of Women Voters Lincoln-Lancaster County President, Jean McGuire, along with Reid Gahan, a landlord that supports Lincoln for Fair Housing, River Sky, a tenant who has been impacted by source of income discrimination, and Karen Bell-Dancy, Executive Director YMCA Lincoln, all spoke in support of the initiative. Several news outlets were present and at least 8 articles were generated from the event.
The coalition’s focus has shifted to education and getting out the vote. To learn more about the initiative, attend our Lunch & Learn on March 6. Volunteer or make a donation at FairHousingLNK.org.
The Election Commissioner certified the signatures on Friday, February 7th. The Lincoln City Council has thirty days to either pass source-of-income protections into law or put it on the May 6th ballot.
League of Women Voters Nebraska Legislative Day
League of Women Voters Lincoln-Lancaster County members participated in League of Women Voters Nebraska Legislative day on February 13, a day before the 105th anniversary of the founding of the League of Women Voters.
Members visited many of the Senator’s offices to discuss legislation, pulled Senators from the floor to discuss a particular bill, listened to debate from the balcony and while there, we were recognized by Senator George Dungan from the floor of the Legislature.
If you want to stay abreast of the LWVNE Action Teams’ advocacy work through the hearings on bills, Dianne Bystrom, Communications Director for LWVNE, will post updates each week. See update.
She will also be updating the table of bills weekly on which the LWVNE has submitted online or in-person testimony. This link is also on the website on the Legislative Advocacy tab at the top. See LWVNE Advocacy Summary.
