National Voter Registration Day
Twenty Lincoln-Lancaster County League of Women Voters Deputy Registrars spent National Registration Day at six different locations. The Election Commission had us at Gere Library, Bennett Martin Library and in three locations at Nebraska Wesleyan University. The League was invited and attended the Asian Center Citizenship Celebration where we registered 3 new voters and handed out 5 “Why Women Should Vote” booklets; 3 in English and 2 in Vietnamese.
We completed 77 registrations – most were student registrations but several adult address changes, a couple of “never bothered to register before” ones, and three new citizen ones.
Many of the students scanned the QR code provided and hurried off to class – but asked for a “I Registered to Vote” sticker as they left the table. By the end of the day several walked into one of the three facilities where we were stationed right by the front door and exclaimed happily, “I registered already”.
It was a day filled with conversations, clarifications and pronouncements from those registered that they were grateful for the opportunity to register and were excited to vote.
