About LWVLL

The League of Women Voters of Lincoln-Lancaster County (LWVLL) is a nonpartisan political nonprofit organization of 192 local women and men. LWVLL neither supports nor opposes candidates or political parties at any level of government. Our mission is to Empower Voters and Defend Democracy. Robust voter registration and voter education programs are held in advance of every election. Each year the Lincoln–Lancaster League presents a series of free Zoom Lunch & Learn programs featuring local, state and national speakers who address timely issues important to informed citizens. The League also offers a “one-stop shop” for election information. VOTE411.org is a free nonpartisan online election resource guide on how to register, where to vote, personalized candidate information, and other helpful material for Lincoln voters.

Land Acknowledgement

The salt basin around present-day Lincoln attracted many Indigenous nations to this region, including the Omaha, Ponca, Otoe-Missourias, Kansa, and Pawnee peoples. The Omaha people called the area Niskithe, or “salt water.” Omaha women used eagle feathers to collect the salt, which was used to cure buffalo meat. The Otoe-Missourias ceded the land that became Lincoln to the federal government in 1833 and 1854, and this forced out the tribal peoples who had called the Niskithe home for many generations. Native peoples of many nations live in Lincoln today and contribute to our community’s vitality and diversity.

This Land Acknowledgement was written by Kevin Abourezk, Renee Sans Souci, and David Wishart and made available to Lincoln-area organizations.
